coturnix sent me this via email earlier today. Follow the link and check the comment thread to see another mention of links(footnotes) and pop-up books.
The suggestion in the comment thread is great, but I think the technology already exists here. With some minor tweaking hypertext allows for just what we're looking for. Maybe the format exists already?
